WHO IS MAGLA?
MAGLA is a well known 5-piece Croatian band based in Melbourne, Australia. The experience, repertoire, versatile musicianship and hard work of this band have quickly earned them the reputation of one of Australia’s best Croatian bands.

MAGLA prides and distinguishes itself on the things that matter most – being a professional and flexible band with musical integrity. Their extensive repertoire and quality live sound has made them the band of choice for all Croatian functions and also Croatian/English/Italian weddings. Functions range from nightclub events, weddings and club events to any special celebration.

FORMATION & HISTORY

Before MAGLA was formed, three of the band members (Mate, Danny and Rob) were already members of a previous Melbourne local band “Mostar”. This bond continued as they lead their next project, “Artcave”, which recorded a demo CD that reached the table of the late Zdenko Runjić. He invited Artcave to perform as guests at the prestigious Melodije Hrvatskog Jadrana song festival in 1997, so off they went.

In May 2000, the guys decided to form a new Croatian band in Melbourne. Word-of-mouth eventually landed Edi (now MAGLA’s guitarist) an audition that he passed with flying colours due to his many years of experience as a traveling guitarist around Europe, mainly in Croatia and Germany. MAGLA was a perfect transition for Edi, allowing him to continue playing his guitar while settling into his new home – ‘Australia’.

Still being a bassist short, it seemed no problem at all when the band invited Edi’s old school friend, Hariz (Harry) into the mix. He too, was dealing with a new life in a foreign country and was all too happy to take to the stage again.

During the initial stages of rehearsing, the band was informed that the talented and well known Marijana was not singing with anyone at the time. The band contacted her and as it turned out, she too was keen to be a part of this new, fresh band.

So, it seemed that the beginnings of MAGLA had somehow just fallen into place and they had everything they needed to come out with 'guns blazing''. The band decided that they were going to give the Croatian community a slightly different band, in the way of introducing songs others were ignoring – mainly new pop and dance from Croatia. A combination of hard work and competent musicians with strong and flexible vocals upfront, gave MAGLA the most versatile sound around.

The band made their first impression within the Croatian community when the Australian Croatian Association (ACA) approached the band to perform at the annual Croatian Christmas Disco in Melbourne in 2000. Introducing a completely new band was a risk the ACA were only willing to take after an audition. It seemed XMAS 2000 @ QBH was exactly what people wanted - a new band in a new venue which kick-started a new era in the Melbourne Croatian live music scene.

MAGLA became instantly popular after XMAS 2000, offering a huge influx of new Croatian music of all genres. However, things don’t always run to plan. In late 2004, the band was faced with a member loss when Marijana needed to depart the band due to family commitments. Anyone who has heard Marijana sing would definitely agree that this was a problem for the band. However, after sharing the stage with Marijana for 4 years, this was a challenge that Mate dreaded at first, but knew he had to pull off. He gave it everything during the ACA XMAS 2004 gig to help drive the band to one of their best performances, but more importantly, putting the band to ease and proving to all, that MAGLA was still alive and definitely kicking.

Come 2007 and MAGLA have gone “online” with their website along with the exciting news that Marijana is re-joining MAGLA in May 2007! This will once again give the band it’s repertoire and performances a new dimension that the band is very excited about. They will continue to entertain Croatians with their favourite songs for some time yet.

Some of the guys have worked on originals in the past and are just starting to get back into it. Check out the On the Side page for more details.
